Cannabis Seed Generation: F1, F2, S1 - What It Means for the Grower

Cannabis Seed Generation: F1, F2, S1 - What It Means for the Grower

If you've ever delved into the topic of cannabis seeds, you've definitely seen these markings: F1, F2, S1, sometimes even S3. At first glance, it looks like something complicated and "for breeders". But in fact, it directly affects how your plant will grow and what result you will get.

Let's not get too scientific - let's figure it out in a simple way so that you clearly understand what you're getting and what to expect.

What are F1 hybrids in practice?

F1 - this is the first generation after crossing two stable parent lines. Not just "two bushes", but proven geneticists who have been selected and fixed for a long time. The result is the most even seeds.

For a grower, this means one important thing - predictability. Plants grow more evenly, with fewer surprises in shape, smell, or speed of development. This is especially appreciated if you grow indoors or want a stable result without experimenting.

How does F2 differ from F1

F2 is the next stage. Such seeds are obtained from F1 plants, and this is where the fun begins. Genetics “diverge”, and you get more different options.

In real life, this means that plants can differ more: one will be compact, another will stretch, the third will show a different aroma. For some, this is a minus, and for others, on the contrary, an opportunity to find something unique.

Therefore, F2 is more suitable for those who like to experiment, and not just get a stable result.

What happens with F3 and beyond

When you go further — F3, F4 — genetics gradually stabilize. But that's another story. Such generations are used more for breeding or "proving" the variety.

For an ordinary grower, this does not always matter much. More often, they choose either a stable F1 or a more "lively" F2 for an interesting result.

S1, S2, S3 — what is it all about?

A separate topic — this is the S-generation. Here everything is based on self-pollination. They take one plant and get seeds from it.

In practice, this means that such seeds repeat the mother plant as much as possible. But not ideally — there is still a certain variation.

The further — S2, S3 — the more stability. But this is more about selection and control of genetics than about the usual grow “for yourself”.

Why F1 is often considered the best option

There is a reason why many growers choose F1. The so-called hybrid vigor works here — when two strong genetics are combined, the result is even more hardy.

In reality, this gives simple things: plants start faster, tolerate stress better and yield more consistently.

Plus — less hassle. You sow and understand that you will get approximately the same result for all plants.

What is more important — stability or variability

And here the main question is: what do you need as a grower.

If you want an even grow without surprises — take F1. This is the “sow and work” option. Minimum risk and maximum control.

If you want something more interesting, to catch different phenotypes and perhaps find something unique - then F2 or other generations can give more variations.

There is no right or wrong option. There is only your goal.
